Hi all,
The weather forecast for Thursday was lousy anyway, but I was exposed to COVID earlier this week at my poker game and I’m isolating for the next week-plus. (Haven’t tested positive yet, thankfully!)
We will NOT play the Night Market Thursday the 16th but we (or at least you but not me) WILL jam a the church that evening. David and George are traveling. John will be in charge and welcomes assistance from anyone who wants to jump in. The books will be at the church for those who yet aren’t plugged in with the stuff the kids do these days. Jam away, and have a great time!
Make Music Day — still happening, with an ANTHEM
Last time, the question came up about the song everyone does to celebrate Make Music Day (on the 21st; we’re playing at Pelagic at 7, in case you forgot). I asked the US organizers about that. They said there wasn’t one, but since the event began in France, a French song would be perfect.
So on June 21, 2022, the Raleigh Uke Jam will provide the official anthem for Make Music Day: La Vie En Rose. I hope Marie will be available to lead. (I also hope to be there, too.) We should record it, post to our site, and share with the MMD folks worldwide. We’re such pace-setters.
What’s a Kalamazoo?
The “Down on the Corner” lyric mentions Poor Boy twangin’ out rhythm on his Kalamazoo. That was the budget guitar line Gibson made in the ‘20s and beyond and became the instrument of choice for a lot of street musicians and others who didn’t have a lot of scratch. Here’s a video of an old one played by Jake Wildwood, a fellow who repairs and restores all sort of vintage and newer instruments, including ukes! His YouTube page is a great follow if you’re a gearhead.
Stay well and hope to see you soon!
