Greetings,
It’s been a bit quiet on the newsletter front, but not in our uke world. We had a fun time at Azure Violins last week and expect to visit regularly (though perhaps not monthly … for now)!
Enough recapping. Let’s move ahead to:
June 1 and June 15: Jam at the church, 7 p.m. You know the drill. We’ll have fun. We debuted Joni’s “Big Yellow Taxi” at Azure. It’s in Dropbox (link here) and I’d like to add it to the rotation.
June 21, Make Music Day! Yours truly is organizing the day’s events. I’ll be bouncing around while joining y’all for uking. We have a couple of playing options, probably without a setlist. Some of the songs will come from Alfred Music Co.’s beginners’ ukulele book that’s provided by Make Music Day US HQ. We’ll have copies at both places. The rest of the songs will be from our book, and we’ll treat the events as we do our downtown jams as we invite visitors and onlookers to join us. Hope we see as many of you as possible at one or both jams! Please arrive a little early so we get as much playing time as possible. If you can’t stay the entire time, dropping by for a few songs would be wonderful.
4-5 p.m. Oberlin Regional Library, Clark Street (formerly Cameron Village Library).
7-8:30-ish p.m., Riparian Provision Co., 1408 S. Saunders Street. There may be a food truck …
FYI, from noon - 1 p.m., our own “Harmonica” George Douglas will lead a harmonica workshop/playalong at the City of Raleigh Museum, 220 Fayetteville Street. Each participant will get a free harmonica while supplies last — but you gotta participate!
Also, some of y’all will join The Handsome Ladies of Raleigh from 4-5 at Athens Drive Community Library to play in a bluegrass jam and then join us at Riparian.
What a fun day we’ll have!
June 29, 7-9 p.m., Open Mic at the church. Prepare a song or two to perform before our massively supportive audience (meaning all y’all, including those who choose not to play). I’ll have a signup sheet so we can ensure everyone has time to share at least one song.
In July, we’ll have our regular first- and third-Thursday jams at the church. We may not schedule any extra playdates that month. August will be busy (ANOTHER Open Mic on the 31st, for starters), but we’ll see. Yes, we’re in demand, but I also want to respect everyone’s time and troubles.
Round, round, get around, they get around …
Not the Raleigh Uke Jam, but some of our people are playing public gigs outside the friendly confines of our humble group.
Far From Done has dates scheduled at Gizmo Brew Works Raleigh near Angus Barn on June 2 (this week!), July 7, Sept. 8, and Oct. 6. All from 6-9 p.m. Food trucks and excellent beer guaranteed. The music’s not bad, either.
Speaking of Gizmo, The Bondettes will join an Open Mic at Gizmo Raleigh on Father’s Day, June 11 June 18, 3-6 p.m.! Check with Marie, Nell, or Beth for more details.
Enough for now. See you soon!
