Hello happy people,
“Normal” jams resume Thursday, 7 p.m., at the church. I may need to hire an assistant to keep up with everything going on around here.
Along with all the things listed in the most recent newsletter, there’s more:
Saturday, Aug. 27, is Worldwide Play Music on the Porch Day. It’s a bit like Make Music Day, except not as well known, and a lot more informal. Talk among yourselves. If anyone wants to get together for an informal jam on somebody’s porch — could be your porch, could be a stranger’s — have at it. Even better, shoot a video and we’ll post it on YouTube or Instagram! (We won’t post bail if you’re arrested for trespassing.)
For a few years we’ve discussed jamming as a group in or around the World of Bluegrass Festival downtown at the end of September, and we typically play some bluegrass and old-timey tunes at our September Pelagic jams. Well, this year, the advance work was already done! Our pals Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are hosting an open strum-and-sing event for ukulele players Sunday, Oct. 2, 2:30 - 4:30 p.m., somewhere on Fayetteville Street. They announced the date in their monthly newsletter. Details will follow. But we can finally get some overdue recognition from the bluegrass community for ukuleles. Don’t tell the Ghost of Bill Monroe.
To set the mood, here are the Po’ Ramblin Boys, in one of the backstage campers at this year’s Merlefest, playing something in our book. They’ll be at IBMA/WOB, nominated for among other things Entertainers of the Year AND the Best Collaborative Recording of the Year, when they were joined for this one by Fiddle Player of the Year nominees Jason Carter (Del McCoury Band) and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (Molly Tuttle Band).
Watch ol’ bandit run!
